Back on July 6, George W. Bush' s birthday, I suggested on my blog that our illustrious Red State president should organize a fund to help provide for the college tuition of the children of our service people killed or wounded in Iraq. My idea was to call it the July 6th Fund, but I really don' t care what the fund is called, to be honest with you. My thought was that, because he and his benefactors have profited so handsomely during this nightmare of an administration and particularly during the Iraq war, giving back in this way is the least they could do.
Now I realize that I 'm making a couple of risky assumptions here:That George W. Bush could actually be responsible for anything and complete it successfully. However, I believe that the situation in which we all find ourselves to one degree or another concerning his failed Iraq war is so desperate that we must risk making these kinds of assumptions. I just read at CNN a minute ago that, according to the latest poll, only one in five Americans believe that we are winning the war in Iraq. So it is plain that the "cut and run" rhetoric from this administration and its flunkies no longer registers with the vast majority of the people of this country.
That he actually has a conscience and thinks that the July 6th Fund would be a good idea.
Believe me when I tell you that I don' t enjoy pointing out any of this. Believe me when I say that, if there was a speck of hope that this Republican government of clowns could actually somehow come up with a viable plan to stabilize this mess and keep our people (and innocent Iraqis) from getting killed, I would grit my teeth and go along with it.
Even though the thieves who stole the 2000 presidential election and very likely did the same thing in 2004 would be able to crow and boast again if they pulled this off, I would look the other way if it meant saving our people in the field.
But that 's not going to happen. Not by a long shot.
As we prepare to honor our veterans by flying our flags and reading about their heroic stories in the newspaper or even listening to them (perhaps family members) tell of their struggles in another time, let us rededicate ourselves to participating in our government as citizens by voting, contacting politicians, and writing to newspapers (and blogs also, of course), or even performing peaceful protest if needed, all with the goal of ensuring the best possible government representation on our behalf. By doing that, we will be helping to protect future generations of service people from having to endure the hell of another illegal war fought for reasons that turned out to be lies, all for the betterment of a select few who (for the most part) know nothing about the duty of military service and the honor of standing with their fellow brothers and sisters, fighting in the name of the country they love and a truly just cause.* * * * *Doomsy is a technical writer who lives in suburban Philadelphia and blogs at The Liberal Doomsayer.
