Far Out (Or, Kofi to Klingons)

Texas blogger Tim Heard, via Aussie blogger Tim Blair, gets the new year off to an, uh . . . out of this world start with the (possibly apocryphal) news that the United Nations has taken on yet another Herculean task in the service of world peace -- it will consider a resolution to contact extraterrestrials for the purpose of establishing diplomatic relations.

I say possibly apocryphal because the story has a bit of an odd smell about it. A press release on the resolution apparently was posted on a U.N. web site but then suddenly disappeared. Abducted by aliens, or something.

Heard said he did manage to download a copy of the resolution before it went poof:
For the first time in 27 years, the United Nations General Assembly will be debating the issue of establishing diplomatic relations with advanced Extraterrestrial Civilizations that may now be visiting Earth.

On December 16, 2005, a Resolution to Establish a United Nations Decade of Contact was formally transmitted to the incoming president of the General Assembly, H.E. Jan Eliasson of Sweden by the Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS), a Non-Government Organization.

Almost to the day twenty-seven years ago, on December 18, 1978, the United Nations General Assembly voted to approve decision 33/426, inviting U.N. Member States "to take appropriate steps to coordinate on a national level scientific research and investigation into extraterrestrial life, including unidentified flying objects, and to inform the Secretary-General of the observations, research and evaluation of such activities.
Notes "Chip," a blogger from Florida, after reading the resolution:
Genocide in Sudan will be addressed after we improve relations with Andromeda.

The CIA should make it known to the world that they are now (and have been for several decades) in contact with extraterrestrial intelligences, and that these intelligences have been directing human affairs at a high level, concerned as they are to ensure our survival through what is a dangerous age -- the nuclear age, of course.

That this is utter nonsense would not matter, since humankind has shown itself perfectly ready to believe that a superior intelligence has been directing our affairs since the year dot.

If those outfits in the middel east have to believe in God, lets's make sure we have one that's better and more modern than theirs. Hmmm?
