The drum solo, long a rock concert staple, usually was an excuse to hit the snack bar or lavatory even if the drummer was hot stuff. The trick was making it back into the arena before his bandmates returned to the stage and the main event resumed.
Alas (or not), the drum solo has joined Keith Moon, John Bonham and other late, lamented drummers in the Great Rock 'n' Roll Beyond, according to Dan Neil in a witty Los Angeles Times article.
