Abraham Lincoln was the greatest American president because none faced such enormous challenges, none grew more in office and none reinvented the United States to the extent that he did.
All of that and the fact that 2009 is the bicentenary of his birth is reason enough to present a series of posts on the great man over the next 12 months.
That series kicked off last Sunday and will include guest posts from historians and writers, as well as excerpts from David Herbert Donald's Lincoln, the best mainstream biography on the great man, and lots of photographs.
These photos include Alexander Gardener's "Cracked Plate Lincoln" (above), famous because the bullet that took Lincoln's life followed the path of the crack in the photo taken two months before his assassination.

the bullet entered behind lincolns left ear and lodged above his right eye. It's a great photo, but the romantic idea that gardner's image captured the line of the bullet is a little flawed ... he probably would have survived if the bullet only grazed the top of his head.
