Joe The Plumber: GOP Springs A Leak

One of my weaknesses is that I sometimes try to apply rational reasoning to irrational actions, and so it has been with the Republican Party's ongoing love affair with Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber.

I acknowledge that Joe helped crystalize the economic argument against Barack Obama for John McCain during the presidential campaign and then became a right-wing flashpoint when that nasty librul news media came after him for his various frailties, including not even being a licensed plumber.

But Joe's 15 minutes of fame has now stretched into three months, and after a ridiculous publicity stunt for the exerable Pajamas Media TV as a faux war correspondent, he is being welcomed into the Republican inner sanctum as a strategist and back scratching with conservative sycophants Glenn Reynolds and Michelle Malkin -- again on PJTV.

A right-of-center commentator of my acquitance argues that the party's do-si-doing with Joe is not really a love affair.

"Sarah Palin definitely . . . Joe, I don't think so," he says, and there may be merit to that argument because I can't find a single article that makes the case that the guy actually has two brain cells to rub together, let alone can help the GOP find its way out of the wilderness.

In fact, Joe is about as unintelligible as Sarah, having this to say about his opposition to the Obama economic stimulus package: "It's an example of American government . . . kicking our butts left and right."

Meanwhile, The Weekly Standard, which has been loyally carrying the Republicans' water as they trek through the wilderness, is not swooning over Joe, and had this to say about his PMTV stint: "He clearly does not know the first law of holes: once you are deep in one, you should stop digging."

Indeed.
