Dirty tricks are a staple of American politics, but a Republican phone-jamming scheme in New Hampshire prior to Election Day 2002 to keep state Democrats from being encouraged to vote has stood out as being especially rotten.
The White House has now been linked to the scheme, which has resulted in three federal convictions and a pending indictment.
Court records show that the Republican officials responsible for the jamming operation made two dozen calls to the White House in the run-up to the election, including key calls to a White House insider who was fully aware of the operation. The GOP says the calls were about a close Senate race. Democrats say that’s hooey. Me too.
