America's Lawyers Are Revolting

The American Bar Association has set up an investigating committee to review President Bush's disdain for the Rule of Law.

The focus will be on his extraordinary use of "signing statements" to retroactively invalidate parts of over 750 statutes, including those on outlawing the use of torture and restrictions on law enforcement agencies in the updated USA Patriot Act.

More here and here.

(Hat tip to Andrew Sullivan at The Daily Dish.)

THE LAW IS AN ASS, BUT AS FOR LAWYERS . . .

The concept that America's lawyers are revolting is double edged, of course. (See my post on The New Philadelphia Lawyer: Attorney Outlaw to better understand the other meaning.)

For example, there's the New York City law firm that is accused of making $11.3 million in illegal payments to three people who served as plaintiffs in more than 150 lawsuits.

The New York Times has more here.
