Science Saturday III: Sling Me Up, Scotty

One of the methods being contemplated for getting into space uses the principle of the good old slingshot.

The Slingatron (gotta love the name) is a giant rapid-fire slingshot. The machine would spin a projectile faster and faster through a spiral-shaped tube, building up increasing amounts of centripetal force along the way – just like a discus-thrower.
