The Domesday Book Goes Online

The Domesday Book, one of the most important annals in English history, is now available online.
The tome, also called the Book of Winchester, is a record of a great census of England completed in 1086 for William the Conquerer. A primary purpose of the census was to find out who owned what so that they could be taxed.
The book is actually two books and contain information on more than 13,000 places on sheep-skin parchment. Until now, the only way to study the book was to buy expensive facsimiles. A CD-Rom version costs £2,500, or about US$5,000.
