Sandra Day O'Connor: The Dictatorship Starts Here

Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, gave a little-noticed but powerful speech at Georgetown University the other day. It was a thinly veiled attack on legislators like Tom DeLay and John Cornyn who criticize judges -- and hint that killing them is not such a bad idea -- because they don’t happen to toe the right-wing line.

The recently retired justice also issued a warning: Such talk is the "beginnings" of a dictatorship.

O'Connor would not allow her speech to be broadcast, but National Public Radio's Nina Totenberg was there. You can hear Totenberg's report here, while Raw Story has a transcript of the report.

ALL ARE GONE DOWN

How can he rehabilitate
His reputation, once so great?
No, Colin Powell is a dud,
Falling to earth with hollow thud.
He lost it because he
Acted dishonestly,
Giving a false report:
Put him before the court!

How can she restoration seek
To her good name, that was unique?
No, Sandra Day Oconnor´s name
Will never lose its touch of shame.
She got it because she
As not impartially
Played plain partisanship:
From court she had to slip.

Let be a roll-call called in hell:
There are too many names to tell,
All as who with the hostile crew
Associated--you know who!

Furthermore, all as did support
The lies and slander, long and short,
Or merely looked the other way--
Say, are there any left, I pray?

All are gone down,
Down, down, down,
To weep and moan,
Gnash teeth and frown.
