As expected, U.S. Rep. Tom "The Hammer" DeLay swept to victory against three opponents yesterday in the Texas Republican primary.
He still faces an uphill fight to hold onto his seat in the November election because of campaign financing irregularities and his close ties to disgraced super lobbyist Jack "King Rat" Abramoff. The U.S. Supreme Court also has agreed to hear a challenge to a redistricting plan of dubious constitutionality that DeLay rammed through the Texas legislature last year that was weighted in favor of Republicans.
One would have thought that the last people that DeLay would want to be seen with in public are some of the very lobbyists who have contributed to his problems, but he has no shame and spent primary night at a fundraiser packed with lobbyists who paid from $1,000 to $5,000 for the privilege of hanging with him. CNN has the story here. (Check out the photo accompanying the story. It looks like The Hammer has grown Hobbit ears.)
Meanwhile, the explosive Vanity Fair article on Abramoff is now available online. (You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access it.)
