I had really wanted to avoid writing anything on the spit storm over President Obama's news conference comments about the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates for breaking into his own home.
I am not black but some of my best friends are. Really. My parents were not black but back in the day were civil-rights activists. And so I presumably have some idea about what it's like to be a black person in America. But you know what? I really don't.
Which makes the negative reaction of the chattering classes -- virtually all lily white -- to Obama's honest and measured comments deeply offensive.
