I suppose that those of us who support our veterans should be grateful that President Bush and John McCain capitulated on the enhanced G.I. Bill, which will double college benefits. But it is worth recalling that both were adamantly opposed to it because of the dubious claim that better bennies would mean fewer long-term enlistments.
Bush's cave-in was understandable because of the deep bipartisan support for the measure, which was part of a defense spending bill.
But Mr. War Hero jumped the shark as he has in the past by failing to show up for the key vote on something he opposed and then acted like he had been for it all along.
