Dubya's Long Slide Into the National Toilet

I've long been fond of saying that public opinion polls are nothing more than snapshots in time. Well, the time is now for President Bush, and the dismal poll numbers that he has been putting up send an ominous message to the White House and Republicans in general with mid-term elections only four weeks away.

After a brief rebound in the polls in September, the president is heading into record low territory.

The Iraq war has become such a catastrophe that there is nothing the president can do to reverse course. Worse yet, this chicken hawk continues to puff out his chest and declare that the U.S. is "staying the course."

The impact of the Mark Foley scandal on the election has been overstated. Only one in five Americans gave Congress favorable marks before the scandal, and it just can't go any lower without cutting into the Total Fucking Moron base.

The bottom line for Republicans facing re-election is that they can't depend on Bush to bail them out because of the root of his problems: He has no crediblity.

There is a deservedly perverse dynamic at work as Bush stumbles to the three-quarter mark in his presidency:

His hubris, inability to level with the American people and says he's sorry when he's screwed up has had a snowball effect.

The lies over things that didn't need to be lied about and the lies about things that had to be lied about to cover up and avoid being held accountable have become a witch's brew so toxic that there's not a Superfund site in the country anywhere near as bad.
If you're a newcomer to Kiko's House, put on your biohazard suit and wade into my essay titled Assessing George Bush on the Anniversary of 9/11 (Or: Why No Stem Cells Have Been Killed in Iraq. Click here.

I you want to see hopelessly bewildered The Decider seems these days when confronted by tough questions, click here for a transcript of his news conference in the Rose Garden. His analogy to poker (as in the game) is especially inept.
