When Bad Things Happen to Rich People

Los Angeles police have finally cracked the case of a mad Swede who destroyed an exotic Ferrari in a super high-speed crash.

Police arrested Stefan Eriksson, 44, over the weekend at his house in the Bel Air section for drunk driving and seized two of his other toys, a $1 million black Ferrari Enzo and a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which is worth only $600,000.

The intrigue began when Eriksson's red Enzo (see photo) crashed on the Pacific Coast Highway while going an estimated 162 miles an hour. Eriksson claimed that a mysterious German by the name of Dietrich was racing another hot rodder, but neither Dietrich or the other alleged driver have been found.

Eriksson is, as they say, no stranger to police. He has done prison time for counterfeiting and it turns out that he has made no payments on his cars for months.

Only 400 Ferrari Enzos were built. They were named for the founder of the famed Italian sports car maker and are powered by a 6-liter V-12 engine that produce 660 horsepower. They top out at 217 miles per hour and can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds.

The Los Angeles Times has been all over the story.
