Humphrey: U.K.'s First Moggie (ca. 1989-2006)

When Humphrey arrived at 10 Downing Street, the British prime minister's official residence, Margaret Thatcher was ensconced there.

As The Guardian reports, Humphrey survived many a scandal, including a few of his own making (he once killed two robins) and was nearly run over by Bill Clinton's presidential limousine.

Humphrey was shipped off to a military college when it was found that PM Tony Blair's wife, Cherie, was allergic to the moggie, or mixed breed. The minority Tories, ever anxious for an edge, spread vicious rumors that he had, in fact, been the victim of a Blairite plot.

Well, Humphrey has now passed to his eternal reward -- which presumably includes plenty of birds and mousies for the taking -- at the ripe old age of 17 or so.
