I've banged the Silky Pony pretty hard since he was forced to acknowledge what was common knowledge -- his affair with Rielle Hunter. So it's kind of anticlimactic that John Edwards appears to be on the verge of acknowledging what common sense dictates -- that he is the father of Hunter's child.
What is amazing is that Elizabeth Edwards, who is terminally ill with cancer, apparently continues to resist the idea of her husband of 32 years acknowledging paternity despite the stream of revelations from former loyalists.
These include former aide Andrew Young, who once claimed he was the father and now asserts in a tell-all book proposal that Edwards promised Hunter that after his wife died, he would marry her in a rooftop ceremony in New York with an appearance by the Dave Matthews Band. (At least he has good taste in music.)
Mrs. Edwards, like Hillary Clinton and other scandal-tarred spouses, worshiped at the altar of political prominence and power, so much so that she overlooked clear evidence of her husband cheating. She contributed to her husbands' phony public persona as straight arrow and then circled her own wagon when confronted with the truth. And apparently continues to do so.
How terribly sad.Top photograph by Jim R. Bounds/The Associated Press
