Wasilla, Alaska is a poor town unless you count the methamphetamine dealers, while Trigg Palin is a special-needs child and Bristol Palin is a high-school dropout.
But apparently none of those realities concern their mother, Sarah Palin, who has announced that as governor of Alaska she will accept only $514 million of the $930 million due her state in federal stimulus money although some $172 million of the money she is refusing is earmarked for education, much of it for schools in poor communities with high dropout rates and for special-needs children.
Palin, of course, is pandering to the almighty Republican conservative base in the Lower 48 since she has never refused a cent of federal money in the past.
She also knows that state legislators can ask for and get the dough anyway, which by her crude calculus -- and that of other Republican governors like Mark Sanford of South Carolina -- shifts the onus onto them.
That would be, um . . . the onus of doing the right thing instead of pandering.
A-freaking-hem.
