Ultimately, the saddest thing about the long decline of General Motors is that even when confronted by its own mortality, its decision this week to dump Pontiac and three other model lines and make other deeply painful cuts had less to do with the marketplace than being able to continue to suck on the taxpayer teat.
These are moves that the General should have made years ago. That they were made only with a cocked and fully loaded gun to its head speaks volumes about the dismal future for this once proud company.
