The search for George Washington's boyhood home is over. Remains excavated in the last three years were those of the long-sought dwelling on the Ferry Farm overlooking Rappahannock River in Virginia about 50 miles from the city that bears the first president's name.
Legend has it that young George threw a stone or coin across the river to Fredericksburg, but the archaeologists who made the discovery said there was not a single cherry tree anywhere in sight, not even a stump, further discrediting the apocryphal tale that the boy owned up to whacking his father’s prized specimen.
