Month 47 Of the War By the Numbers

In the course of the nearly four-year-old Mess in Mesopotamia, February 2007 was definitely a doozy.
There was the first anniversary of the civil war, some of the bloodiest suicide attacks to date, an upsurge in U.S. helicopter shoot downs by insurgents, Modtada Al-Sadr's all-expenses-paid vacation to Iran, the official start of President Bush's "surge" strategy and arcades akimbo in Congress as the Democrats dithered over what to do about the war and the Republicans stonewalled.

Oh, and the president kept his record unblemished by not attending any military funerals.
Some 275 American troops left this mortal coil in the three-month period ending in February, well up from 185 during the same period in 2005-06.

Herewith the gory details:

The single most telling statistic is that the number of US military deaths is 40% or so higher than the number of Iraqi army deaths.

Not so much standing up as crouching.

The apparent discrepancy between U.S. and Iraqi military deaths is somewhat misleading. For an explanation, go here:

Shaun, our number of 273 is off by one. It is actually 274 as Feb. closed with 79, not 73. I had done my posting yesterday earlier and they had listed only 273 but upon checking another was added sometime after I had posted and before midnight. I hate to add one more, as it represents another family suffering.

Yes, the ICCC has added the 83rd death in just the last couple of hours. I have adjusted the numbers accordingly.

Thank you.

That's one way to slice the stats, but there's another way as well: some of those Iraqi police casualties may be from ordinary police operations -- arresting looters or whatever. And the American soldiers are without question getting a superior level of medical care so that our k.i.a. figures mask the full seriousness of the violence.

I dont think either of those considerations alter Roggio's basic point, or yours, but they're worth bearing in mind.

Shaun, it pains me to mention this but they added another fatality for the month of February and we now stand at 80 for Feb. and 275 for the past 3 month totals.

Good grief!
