Bush, 30, is the oldest son of former Flordia Governor Jeb Bush. He said that he was moved to join the service in part when he attended the commissioning in October of the aircraft carrier named for his grandfather -- the USS George H.W. Bush.
The news is rich with irony:
The father of the elder Bush offered to pull strings to keep his son out of World War II, but the son and future president enlisted and served heroically as a Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific.
The elder Bush offered to pull string to beep his son and future president out of the Vietnam War. The son accepted and served with something less than distinction in the Air National Guard when he actually showed up.
George P. Bush, who campaigned for his uncle and Dick Cheney in 2004, will serve in the Navy Reserve for eight years.
