Eagle Eye

A webcam showing two bald eagles patiently incubating their two eggs in a nest high in a tree on Hornby Island, British Columbia, Canada, is attracting worldwide attention to the tune of 10 million hits a day.

The eagle chicks are due to hatch at any time and online viewers are hoping to witness live the moment the eggs begin to crack.

Doug Carrick, a 73-year-old retired accountant, set up the webcam after noticing the nest. A small plexiglass housing was put in place to protect the mini-camera, the device was connected to his computer and Carrick started broadcasting images last month.

A forum also has been established for fans of the eagles to chat and post their favorite images from the webcam.

Carrick tells the Guardian News Blog that he hopes the webcam will expose people to the beauty of the eagles and convince them of the importance of protecting their habitats.
