Iraq II: Who is That Man in the Hood?

Salon magazine is challenging the identity of a man profiled in a front page New York Times story who claims that he is the hooded figure being abused by American troops in an infamous photograph taken at Abu Ghraib prison.

The online magazine bases its challenge on an examination of Abu Ghraib photographs and an interview with a Army investigator who says the man identified by the Times is not the detainee in the photograph.

The Times says that it "attempted" to verify the claim that the man is Ali Shalal Qaissi (also known as Haj Aliwith) with Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International and will fully investigate Salon's findings.
